From Dave Howland, Chairman
Following my previous update on discipline, it is disappointing to report that the club received two further red cards the very next weekend. As a result, the Club Committee was required to appear before the East Midlands Disciplinary Committee under RFU Rule 5.12: “Conduct prejudicial to the interests of the game.” This was triggered by the club reaching eight red cards this season. While that number may not seem excessive to some, many clubs in the East Midlands with similar playing numbers remain well below this threshold.
As highlighted previously, such breaches can lead to fines and points deductions for the 1st XV. We were fortunate that our Discipline Secretary, Simon Collins, was able to demonstrate at the hearing that the club is actively taking steps to address the issue and prevent further occurrences. As a result, no fines or points deductions have been imposed at this time. However, the Committee made it clear that any further red cards may result in both financial penalties for the club and points deductions for the 1st XV.
This warning remains in place until December 2026, meaning we have the remainder of this season and half of next season to ensure our conduct does not attract further sanction. All players and coaches must take this extremely seriously in their approach to team management and personal behaviour on the pitch.
Going forward, any future red cards will be dealt with rigorously by the club. If an offence is proven, there will be no mitigation, and any associated costs will be recovered from the offending player or responsible adult. Over the coming weeks, we will be holding face‑to‑face meetings with players and coaches to reinforce this message and outline the actions required to prevent further disciplinary issues.
To reiterate: any dissent or abuse directed at match officials will not be tolerated. If proven, such behaviour may have severe consequences for the individual involved. Regarding violent conduct, referees have been instructed to apply the laws of the game strictly. Any striking with the hand, knee, foot, or head is highly likely to result in a red card. These are the laws of rugby; retaliation is not a defence. The correct response is to walk away and communicate concerns through the captain or coach. Discipline on the pitch is one of rugby’s core values, and anyone wearing an Old Northamptonians shirt should embody this essential aspect of player safety and respect.
The club has long enjoyed an excellent reputation for discipline and respect, both within the East Midlands and beyond. I am asking all players and coaches to help us maintain that reputation. Poorly judged actions by individuals can have consequences for the entire club. Please ensure it is not you.
