The late, late show again as Bishops Cleeve reach third consecutive County Cup final with win over Cheltenham Town

Ben Ware25 Feb - 10:15

Bishops Cleeve are in the final of the GFA Senior Challenge Cup thanks to a 2-1 win over Cheltenham Town Reserves at Kayte Lane.

BY BILLY TAYLOR

Sopuruchuckwu Obieri grabbed the first goal of the match in the second half with a brilliant shot pelted into the bottom left-hand corner. Noah Rubio went up the other way and curled the ball toward captain Ross Langworthy, who put it past Mamadou Diallo from close range. Jake Lee grabbed the winner from a Toby Holland corner, which saw the former Cheltenham Town man head it home, to put Cleeve into the final.

The Robins came very close to being the first on the scoresheet, with Ieuan Bailey grabbing a chance outside the box and flying it towards Sam Gilder, where it hit the woodwork to the relief of the Mitres backline.

Rubio was up to his hijinks again as the winger played a brilliant ball into the box to Reegan Messenger, who got his shot off, but it was wide of the mark.

Cheltenham’s youthfulness was a threat to Cleeve, as they showed pace with a ball dialled across the box to Obieri, cleared by Will Turner.

The recent signing from Rugby Town was showing off his talents to the crowd of Kayte Lane again, with a blistering run from the right seeing him grab a shot from a tight angle to win Cleeve a corner.

Rubio couldn't be stopped, as he had another effort from a difficult angle curled just beyond Diallo before the Robins went up on the counter, as Fred King was fouled, and then played a terrific, quick through ball to Bailey, and he once again hit the woodwork to the heartbreak of the youngster.

Archie Hill stole the ball off Matt Liddiard just before the hour mark, as the forward tried to bring it around Gilder, but the keeper was able to pounce on the ball to put enough pressure on the forward for the ball to go out for a corner.

The breakthrough for Cheltenham came from Obieri, who beat Lee on the right-hand side, and the striker put it past goalkeeper Gilder to put the Robins in front.

Rubio came close to giving the home side the equaliser with a swinging shot which went just past Diallo’s net.

The appropriately aged Langworthy added to his 20 goals this season, as Rubio placed the ball at the captain's feet to put him through for the equaliser.

Jay Malshasnkyj put the ball across the box, which threatened Diallo, and it was brought back by Rubio, who played it to Langworthy before his shot was blocked by Cameron Walters.

Lee won it for the Mitres, with Holland’s swinging corner guided perfectly to the defender's head to put Bishops Cleeve into the final, where they will take on either Yate Town or Forest Green.

Bishops Cleeve are away this weekend to Bristol Manor Farm, as Paul Collicutt's men look to keep their spot in the playoff positions.
